Unidentified assailants shot Iyasin Khan Palash, 50, described as a top criminal, in the Rampura TV Center area under Hatirjheel police station in the capital.
Palash had been released on bail from jail a month earlier. The incident took place around 2 p.m. on Friday (June 12). According to police, Palash, also known as “Kailla Palash,” was known as a top criminal in the Hatirjheel-Rampura area.
A trial court had sentenced Palash to death in the killing of Jubo Dal leader Mizan, who was shot in Rampura on May 29, 2002.
A higher court later reduced his sentence to life imprisonment.
Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Rampura police station, said Palash was returning home after prayers around 1:45 p.m. on Friday. A milad was being held at his home that day. As he reached the front of the Rayel Mishti sweet shop within the Rampura police station limits, assailants who arrived on a motorcycle shot him and fled, the officer said. He was hit by two bullets in the head. With help from local residents, the wounded Palash was rescued and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the afternoon. It was not yet certain who attacked Palash, or why, police said.
Earlier, on November 10 last year, listed top criminal Tarik Saif Mamun, 55, was shot dead in public in the Sutrapur area of the capital. In addition, another top criminal, Khandaker Naim Ahmed Titon, was killed in a shooting in the New Market area on April 28 this year.
