Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that those responsible for recent high-profile crimes, including the killing of four members of a single family in Rangpur, have been brought to justice with great speed. He said no suspect in any crime committed since the current government took office has evaded arrest — police, he said, have managed to apprehend the accused within a reasonably short time in every case.

He made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion and prayer gathering organized by BNP in Naya Paltan, in the capital, on Wednesday, August 26, to mark Eid-e-Miladunnabi (peace be upon him). In his remarks, the home minister highlighted the achievements and successes of the government’s law enforcement agencies.

He said: “Six months have passed since the current government took office. In that time, there has been no crime committed in the country whose perpetrators police failed to arrest in the shortest possible time. Not a single incident has been an exception, and this is one of the current government’s biggest achievements.”

Referring to the tragic killings in Rangpur, Salahuddin Ahmed said law enforcement carried out an overnight operation immediately after the shocking incident and arrested the main suspects. He said they were brought to justice within a short time of the crime being committed.

He also noted that the judicial process in several high-profile cases, including the “Ramisa murder” case, has been completed with great speed. He said it would not be reasonable to expect more than this from the government in such a short time in office.

On the desired improvement and reform of the law-and-order situation, the home minister said clearly that revolutionary change overnight is not possible in any long-established system. However, he said, the current government is committed to transforming the law enforcement agencies into a disciplined, transparent and accountable professional force. Ensuring the safety of people’s lives and property, and meeting their expectations, should be the police force’s core objective, he said.

He assured that law enforcement agencies would soon be brought to a level where they can flawlessly meet public expectations and emerge as a force truly shaped by what the public wants.
