A mobile court in Chaugachha, Jashore, has seized 13,550 kilograms of fertilizer and fined a shop owner, Khairul Islam, 45, 20,000 taka for illegally stockpiling it.
The court ordered the seized fertilizer sold to farmers at the government-set price, with the proceeds deposited to the state treasury.
The mobile court, led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) G.M.A. Munib, raided Khairul Islam’s shop in the Parbazar area of Chaugachha municipal town around 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, seizing the large quantity of fertilizer and imposing the fine.
Those present during the operation included Upazila Agriculture Officer Musabbir Hossain, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Saiful Islam, Sub-Inspector Hossain Patwari of Chaugachha police station, Chaugachha Bazar Businessmen Association President Selim Reza Awaliar, Upazila Fertilizer Dealers Association President Yunus Ali Dafadar, and members of law enforcement.
During the raid, Khairul Islam was unable to produce any valid documentation as a licensed fertilizer seller. His shop was found to be stockpiling a total of 271 sacks of fertilizer — 28 sacks of MOP, 147 sacks of TSP, nine sacks of DAP and 87 sacks of urea — with a combined retail value of 353,350 taka.
The mobile court judge ordered the fertilizer seized and sold to farmers at the government’s fair price.
After Khairul Islam admitted to illegally stockpiling a large quantity of fertilizer without a valid license, he was fined 20,000 taka under Sections 12 and 18 of the Fertilizer Management Act, 2006, or ordered to serve one month in prison without labor in default of payment. He subsequently paid the fine and signed an undertaking not to illegally stockpile or trade in fertilizer again in the future.
