LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called an emergency meeting to address the economic fallout from the conflict in the Middle East, citing rising fuel prices that are putting pressure on ordinary people.
Starmer will chair the meeting on Tuesday with representatives of the Bank of England and the government’s emergency response committee, known as Cobra.
Speaking to trade union members, Starmer said: “Tomorrow I will lead a Cobra meeting, where representatives of the Bank of England will also be present, so that we can stand by working people during this crisis.”
He warned that the economic impact of the Iran situation could be prolonged. “I want to tell you the truth — the economic impact of this crisis may persist for some time,” he said.
Starmer pointed to rising fuel prices as an example, saying the war is already pushing up costs in the fuel market and could weigh on households.
