Students of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) have given the administration a 24-hour ultimatum to stop the harassment of female students and the nuisance of outsiders.

The ultimatum was given from a human chain at the university’s central Shaheed Minar on Saturday (8 August) afternoon. The students demanded a public apology and exemplary punishment for those involved in filming female students without permission and spreading it on social media.

Students said that if visible action was not taken within the set time, they would launch a tougher movement.

Earlier, on Friday, several outsiders were accused of filming a female student without her permission and spreading it on social media. Over the incident, a memorandum was submitted to the administration with a 10-point demand, including a safe campus, control of outsiders’ entry and the security of female students.

University proctor Dr Md Hamidur Rahman said the video had been removed from social media after speaking with the accused persons’ guardians, and that the accused had given a written undertaking not to repeat such an incident. Security measures to control outsiders’ entry would also be strengthened, he assured.
