US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran lost its military capability and top commanders in the US-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic. He also claimed that Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, was “90 percent finished.” Mojtaba Ali Khamenei was absent last week from the funeral of his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump claimed: “They have no navy, no air force, it’s all gone. Their anti-aircraft systems have been destroyed. All their leaders have been killed, their best leaders have been killed.” Trump further claimed that Iran’s best leaders had died in the war and were no more. Although he used the name “Khomeini” — the name of Iran’s late revolutionary leader who died in 1989 — he appeared to be referring to Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28, the first day of the US and Israeli offensive. Trump added that his (Khamenei’s) son was also “90 percent finished.”

On February 28, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his family were killed in the US-Israeli offensive, and Mojtaba Ali Khamenei was also reported to have been injured. He has not been seen in public since the offensive began, and his prolonged absence has fuelled wide speculation about his health and whereabouts. Trump’s comments came after a fresh round of tit-for-tat attacks between the United States and Iran over the weekend. A new US strike on Iran last Sunday has raised fears that the ceasefire is collapsing. The US president has formally notified Congress that military action against Iran resumed last week, and that he had ordered strikes on multiple Iranian targets in several rounds.
