Bomb-like objects hanging from electric pole wires at three separate locations in Meherpur town sparked panic Saturday morning. Police later recovered the objects and determined they were not bombs but sound boxes typically used in auto-rickshaws.
The three objects were recovered around 9:30 a.m. Saturday from in front of Meherpur University, Court More in the town, and in front of Dr Shahid Shamsuzzoha Park. Local residents said one of the boxes, found near the park, was heard playing a recording of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s speech.
According to police and local residents, a box-shaped object was seen hanging from electrical wires in front of Meherpur University in the morning. Mistaking it for a bomb, local residents panicked. Sadar police station officers went to the scene after being alerted, drawing a crowd of onlookers.
Police, with help from local residents, took the object down and placed it in a bucket of water. Shortly after, the wire connecting it to a battery was disconnected. Upon opening it, the object turned out to be a sound-box-like device. Police then received reports of two similar objects near Court More and in front of Dr Shahid Shamsuzzoha Park, which were also subsequently recovered.
Local pedestrians said that around 9:15 a.m., a recording of Bangabandhu’s speech was heard playing from the box near the park. Once word spread, police quickly went to the scene and removed the device.
Meherpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir said: “There is nothing to be alarmed about. These are not bombs or bomb-like objects — they are sound boxes used in auto-rickshaws.”
The officer-in-charge added that all three recovered objects have been taken to the police station. Investigators are working to identify who placed them there, and legal action will be taken against those responsible once identified.
