Two goals from Lionel Messi helped Inter Miami beat Atlético San Luis 4-2 in the Leagues Cup. On a rain-soaked night, Inter Miami fell behind early but ran out comfortable winners. With his brace, Messi rose to the top as the Leagues Cup’s all-time leading scorer.

The match, at the Nou Stadium, was delayed by 30 minutes in the second half because of lightning in the area.

Messi scored in the 11th and 44th minutes. His tally in 12 Leagues Cup matches is now 14 goals — one more than Los Angeles FC’s Denis Bouanga in the tournament’s four-year history, making him its all-time top scorer.

Besides Messi, Telasco Segovia and defender Maikel scored one each, and Noah Allen provided three assists. The win took Inter Miami’s unbeaten run to eight matches.

Messi returned to Miami’s starting line-up for his second match since the World Cup. At the World Cup he took Argentina to the final for a second straight time, but La Albiceleste lost 1-0 to Spain. The 39-year-old star had come on as a substitute for 37 minutes in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew.

After being kept off the scoresheet against Columbus, Messi did not take long to make an impact on Wednesday. Four minutes in, David Rodríguez headed San Luis in front, before Messi levelled by beating Andrés Sánchez to finish a long cross from Allen. Late in the first half he finished from close range for another goal, and in stoppage time he assisted Maikel’s header.

Soon after joining the club in 2023, Messi led Miami to the Leagues Cup title. Inter Miami also reached the final last year but lost 3-0 to Seattle.
