Police in Dharwad, Karnataka, India, have recovered the blood-stained body of a doctor from a flat in a residential building. His eight-year-old son was admitted to hospital in a serious condition with stab wounds. The boy’s mother, herself a doctor, has been detained for questioning after the incident, NDTV reported.
Police said the incident took place at the Ranka Stello apartment on Karnataka University Road in Dharwad. When relatives, unable to reach the family by phone for a long time, went to the flat and entered, they found the doctor — a 45-year-old anaesthetist — lying blood-stained on the floor. In another room, his eight-year-old son was found seriously injured with stab wounds. The boy’s mother, an ophthalmologist, was present in the flat.
On reaching the scene, police found multiple stab marks on the man’s neck. The injured child was quickly admitted to a private hospital and is under treatment.
Hubballi-Dharwad police commissioner N. Shashikumar said the initial investigation had found no evidence of anyone from outside entering the flat, and that no one other than the couple and their child was in the secured residence at the time.
According to relatives, they had been trying to reach the man since Tuesday evening. The commissioner said the wife had answered the phone, first saying her husband was resting and later that he had gone out; growing suspicious, the relatives went to the flat and discovered what had happened.
Police said the wife appeared mentally distressed and was giving inconsistent accounts of the incident, and that she was being questioned.
Investigators are reviewing the apartment’s CCTV footage and speaking to members of both families. A murder case has been filed at the suburban police station. Police’s initial assessment is that the incident may be linked to a family dispute, but the specific cause and sequence of events have not yet been confirmed. The investigation is continuing.
