A devastating attack has struck a cancer hospital in southwestern Iran. Iran has blamed the United States for the attack. In a live report, the Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera said 211 patients were evacuated as an emergency from the Baghai specialist hospital in the Iranian city of Ahvaz after the attack.
The hospital’s director, Reza Bazar, said the hospital had been left virtually inoperable because of the US attack in Ahvaz.
The hospital’s manager, Dr Majid Bu’azar, told Al Jazeera that 211 patients had to be transferred to other hospitals because of the US attack. He said many of those evacuated were seriously ill, including cancer patients. A hospital staff member told Al Jazeera that special categories of patients, including cancer patients, had been under treatment there. Unfortunately, he said, there had been heavy bombing in the areas around the hospital, and many patients were on oxygen and ventilator support at the time. Some came out of the hospital carrying children, some with saline lines still in their arms and some in wheelchairs; everyone was moved out quickly.
Iran has condemned the US attack as “barbaric.” In a post on the social-media platform X, foreign-ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said the barbaric attack recalled the brutal attacks Israel has carried out on healthcare facilities, leaving hospitalised children in extreme suffering and terror.
He said 211 patients who had been receiving chemotherapy at the hospital had to be moved elsewhere as an emergency. The United States has so far made no comment on the attack.
