NARAYANGANJ, Sept. 26 — Three members of one family were recovered two days after they went missing in a trawler capsize in the Meghna River at Sonargaon in Narayanganj.
Divers from the Fire Service and naval police recovered the three floating bodies from the Meghna River in front of Al Mostafa Factory in Baidyerbazar union of the upazila on Saturday morning.
The victims were Samina, 17, Sajib, 24, and Samin, 5. They were from Srimaddi village in Homna upazila of Cumilla. When the bodies reached their home, relatives’ cries brought grief across the area.
Earlier, on the day of the accident Thursday, the body of another woman, Rayesha Begum, 55, was recovered. Another person, Helal Uddin, remains missing. Divers from the Fire Service and naval police are still conducting operations to recover him.
The bodies of the three victims were taken to Srimaddi village in Homna around 12 noon Saturday. After funeral prayers at a local field, the three were buried side by side at Charergaon cemetery. Assistant Commissioner for Land Nusrat Jabin attended on behalf of the upazila administration, along with local residents.
On Thursday afternoon, a trawler carrying 14 passengers met with an accident in the Meghna River while traveling from Homna in Cumilla to attend a relative’s wedding. The trawler overturned in strong currents near the Aman Cement factory in the Sonamoi area of Baidyerbazar union. Passengers fell into the river within moments.
After receiving the news, divers from Sonargaon Fire Service and Civil Defence and naval police began rescue operations. A woman named Rayesha Begum was recovered dead. Four members of the same family, Helal Uddin, his daughter Samina and his two sons Sajib and Samin, went missing. Searches continued until 10:30 p.m. Thursday but they were not found.
The next day, Friday, divers from the Fire Service and naval police resumed the rescue operation at 7 a.m. Although the sunken trawler was recovered after operations continued until 7 p.m., the four missing people were not found. Two cows tied to the trawler and one goat were found dead.
