The Trump administration is planning to carry out direct military action against JNIM, the al-Qaeda-backed armed group in the African country of Mali. The Washington Post reported the information, citing current and former US officials.
The report said senior officials in the Trump administration are divided over the military step. But several officials, including the White House counterterrorism senior director Sebastian Gorka, have argued in favour of direct action.
The US administration has neither confirmed nor denied the plan for a military strike. One US official said, however, that the United States is advising African countries to buy American weapons to fight terrorism and calling on NATO allies to help regional forces.
The United States has also sharply criticised Russia for failing to maintain security in Mali, saying Russia has proved an ineffective partner in counterterrorism. The Pentagon declined to comment, while the State Department said it strongly condemns the terrorist activity in Mali. The United States designated JNIM a terrorist organisation in 2018.
