Iran’s IRGC writes open letter to US voters before midterms

The United States holds midterm elections in November, and Iran has called on American voters to use their votes to remove President Donald Trump’s supporters from Congress. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made the call in an open letter to US voters.

US forces are due to complete their withdrawal from bases in neighbouring Iraq by Wednesday, ending two decades of presence there, a pullout Tehran sees as its own victory.

Meanwhile, Qatar is continuing efforts to mediate an end to the war between the United States and Iran, now in its eighth month, although President Trump has again said he expects Iran to give in soon.

The IRGC published the 26-page letter on Tuesday. It urges American voters to use their political power to remove current leaders from office, and to reject support for Israel and military intervention abroad. “Remove from power the wicked, deceitful and violent politicians responsible for America’s current condition. Make sure your politicians understand that the world has changed,” the letter says.

It is unclear how much the letter will influence American voters, many of whom may never see it in Iranian media. But US political analysts say it highlights issues that could become big problems for both Trump and the Republican Party before the November 3 election, in which the opposition Democrats hope to regain control of both houses of Congress. If they do, Trump’s political agenda could be obstructed.

During the 2024 campaign, Trump said he would not start any new wars, and promised to rein in ongoing conflicts and bring down inflation. After taking office, however, he joined Israel in attacking Iran.

The Iran war has severely disrupted energy supplies from the Middle East, sending fuel prices soaring on world markets, and the fighting has spread beyond Iran to several Gulf countries.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll published on September 21 found that only 17 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the cost of living, which could be the most important issue for voters in November. The poll also found that 34 percent support US strikes on Iran.

In 2016, breaking with the Republican Party’s traditional stance, Trump called the US invasion of Iraq a “big mistake”. On Wednesday he allowed the final withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, a decision taken in 2024 under then President Joe Biden. It ends the US military presence 23 years after the US-led invasion that toppled Iraq’s long-time ruler Saddam Hussein, unleashed long-running instability across the country and eventually led to the rise of the Islamic State (IS) group.
