Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has carried out a missile and drone attack on the US Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain, describing it as a “retaliatory operation.” In a statement, the IRGC said the attack had targeted the base of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, and that a fuel storage facility at the base had caught fire.
The statement also claimed that a US Patriot missile-defense radar and the fleet’s air-control radar had been destroyed in the attack, along with a C-RAM early-warning radar system and a control and monitoring center for unmanned surface vessels. The IRGC made clear that its retaliatory military operations would continue in future.
The truth of Iran’s claim could not yet be independently verified. Neither the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) nor the government of Bahrain made any immediate official comment on the matter.
