WASHINGTON — At least 228 structures at U.S. military bases and installations in the Middle East have been damaged or destroyed by Iranian airstrikes since the war began, The Washington Post reported Wednesday, citing its analysis of satellite imagery.

The Post said the strikes targeted “aircraft shelters, barracks, fuel depots, aircraft, and critical radar, communications and air defense equipment” at U.S. bases across the region. The newspaper said the scale of the damage is “far greater than the U.S. government has ever acknowledged or than has been reported previously.” CNN reported a few days earlier that at least 16 U.S. bases in the region had suffered “extensive damage.”

The Post reported that, according to officials, the threat of airstrikes has made some U.S. bases in the region “extremely dangerous for normal troop deployment,” and that commanders have moved a large portion of their forces out of the range of Iranian strikes since the start of the war.

A military spokesman told the Post that “expert descriptions” of the damage should not be interpreted as signs of mass destruction or failure, because assessing damage is complex and in some cases “can create misleading impressions.” The spokesman said military commanders would be able to provide a more complete picture of the Iranian attacks once the war ends.

U.S. War Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress last week that the cost of the war with Iran would reach $25 billion. He acknowledged that replenishing the ammunition and military equipment used in the conflict could take months or years. Since the start of the war with Iran, the Pentagon has asked Congress for more than $1.5 trillion in its fiscal 2027 budget request, an increase of 40 to 50 percent over the previous year.
