Iran has announced that it is suspending counter-attacks on US allies in the Middle East after America halted its strikes on Iran for the past two nights. The announcement came from Iran soon after Washington temporarily suspended this war, which is approaching almost five months, and after reports of concern over shortages of munitions in US arsenals.
The spokesman of the Iranian armed forces, Mohammad Akramineya, said: “These strikes continued until a few days ago. But for the past two nights the Americans have halted their attacks. Since our strategy was essentially to strike back in response to hostile or offensive action, we too have for now suspended our counter-attacks and retaliatory military operations.”
The conflict, which grew up around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, at one point wrecked diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran. The war later spread beyond the important energy corridor into attacks on US bases in the Middle East, regional shipping and the US-allied Gulf countries.
This recent pause has, however, raised hopes of a return to diplomatic talks. US media reports have claimed, though, that America may have suspended the strikes because of pressure to maintain supplies of Patriot interceptors and other defensive weapons.
A CNN report, citing a Pentagon source, said the United States’ military operation against Iran is currently “suspended.” On Friday, however, US President Donald Trump threatened strikes on “a far greater scale than this” if necessary.
The New York Times, meanwhile, reported that plans to escalate the conflict further have been put on hold for now because of dwindling weapons stocks.
According to the report, at a meeting at the White House on Friday, Vice-President JD Vance and the United States’ top military officer, General Dan Caine, expressed concern about the risk of the conflict widening. General Caine told Trump that although the military was capable of conducting the necessary operations, it was necessary to be careful about the possible consequences.
