Police in Madarganj, Jamalpur, have recovered the partially decomposed body of a battery-powered auto-rickshaw driver, Jahurul Islam, 50, two days after he went missing.
His body was recovered around 3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 20, from a ditch beside the road roughly 500 meters west of the upazila’s Mathabhanga intersection.
The deceased rickshaw driver, Jahurul Islam, was the son of the late Tofazzal Hossain of the Bakurchar area, in the upazila’s Ward 3, Gunaritola union.
After being alerted, Madarganj Circle Officer Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan and Madarganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Snehashish Roy inspected the scene. The body was then recovered and sent to the morgue at Jamalpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
According to local and family sources, Jahurul Islam was driving his auto-rickshaw with a passenger from the Ghughumari area toward Balijuri Bazar on the night of Monday, August 17. Along the way, in the Amlitala area, he left the auto-rickshaw and went missing. Family members then searched various places but could not find him.
Meanwhile, local residents grew suspicious after seeing the auto-rickshaw lying abandoned by the roadside in the Amlitala area. Locals said chili powder was found scattered inside the vehicle. After being alerted, police recovered the auto-rickshaw from the scene and took it to the police station.
Over Jahurul Islam’s disappearance, his family filed a complaint at Madarganj Model Police Station on the night of Tuesday, August 18. Since then, police and relatives had been working to find him.
On Thursday, police learned from local residents that a body was lying in a ditch on the west side of Mathabhanga intersection. Police then went to the scene and recovered the body. Family members identified the body as Jahurul Islam.
Madarganj Circle Officer Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan said police recovered the body of auto-rickshaw driver Jahurul Islam after being alerted by local residents. The body has been sent to the morgue at Jamalpur Sadar Hospital for autopsy. It is initially believed that he was murdered. The matter is under investigation. The actual circumstances will become clear once the investigation is complete, and legal action will be taken.
Police and local sources say various questions have arisen since the auto-rickshaw was recovered. Police are examining where and how Jahurul Islam was killed, and who may have been involved in the killing. The actual cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report and investigation.
