A fourth-grade schoolboy has been killed in a road accident in Kishoreganj. The most harrowing part of the accident is that the father who went to recover the child’s body — a member of the police at Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station — came face to face with the body of his own son.

The 10-year-old boy was killed at about 10:20 a.m. on Friday, July 24, when a cement-laden truck ran over him on the road by Gaital Abdul Wahed Janata Government Primary School in the town.

He was a fourth-grade pupil of Abdul Wahed Janata Government Primary School. His father, a constable, works at Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station. Their village home is in the adjoining Netrokona district town.

In the morning the boy set out from home on his bicycle to go to a friend’s house on Janata School Road. On the way a speeding cement-laden truck ran him over. Crushed under the truck’s wheels, he died on the spot.

People nearby rushed over immediately after the accident and tried to rescue him, but he died on the spot from his severe injuries.

On receiving news of the accident, the constable went to the scene as part of his duty. At that point he did not yet know that the schoolchild whose body he was going to recover was his own son.

Reaching the scene and seeing the body, he was stunned. Seeing his own child’s lifeless body, he broke down in tears. Colleagues and local people tried to console him. The scene moved many of those present to tears.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station, Mohammad Abul Kalam Bhuiya, said: “The constable is a responsible member of our station. On receiving news of the accident he went to the scene. He then learned there that the child killed was his own son. The incident is extremely painful for us all.”

He said: “The body has been sent to the morgue of Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital. The truck involved in the accident has been seized. The driver, however, has fled. Efforts are under way to arrest him. Legal action in the case is in process.”
