Ending a long wait, the upazila model mosque and Islamic cultural centre in Ranishankail, Thakurgaon was formally inaugurated with Friday prayers.
Thousands of worshippers turned out for the first Friday prayers on Friday (7 August) at the newly built mosque near the Helipad ground in the municipal town. The inaugural event, chaired by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mojibur Rahman, was attended by former MP Iyashin Ali, Ranishankail thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Amanullah Al Bari, upazila BNP general secretary Allama Wadud Bin Nur Alif, municipal BNP president Professor Shahjahan Ali, general secretary Mohsin Ali, MP representative Jamirul Islam, former upazila Jamaat Amir Mizanur Rahman Master, former mayor Alamgir Sarkar, and July fighter Habib, along with other local political and social figures.
Thousands of worshippers from all walks of the municipal town, as well as from far-off areas, took part in the first Friday prayers. Expressing satisfaction, local worshippers said they had long been waiting for such a modern religious centre. The four-storey model mosque can accommodate about a thousand worshippers at once. It will function not only as a place of worship but as a full-fledged Islamic centre, with separate ablution and prayer arrangements for men and women, a modern ablution area, and separate residences for the imam and muezzin.
The Islamic cultural centre features a well-stocked library, an Islamic bookshop, research and dawah activities, a hifz school, and provision for children’s and mass education. Public-service facilities include a Hajj pilgrim registration and training centre, an imam training centre, a guesthouse, and a special arrangement for bathing the deceased. Locals believe the model mosque — combining religious education, worship and varied public services — will serve as a unique religious and social hub for the people of Ranishankail.
