Security-policy and defence analyst Wolfgang Pusztai has, for now, called the defence pact signed between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan “like ink written on paper”. He noted that neither Pakistani nor Turkish troops responded militarily even after a recent Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia, nor did Turkey show any military reaction during Iranian missile attacks aimed at the Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia. The analyst stressed that unless one of the three countries actually has troops present, or Pakistani and Turkish soldiers are directly harmed in an attack on Saudi Arabia, the mutual-defence pact will not work in practice. In his view, without troop deployment on the ground and a real commitment to mutual defence, such a pact is unlikely to turn into an effective defence alliance. The trilateral defence pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan was signed in Mecca last Friday. One notable feature is that an attack on any one country will be treated as an attack on all.
