Residents across Venezuela are spending nights in the street rather than return to their homes after twin earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 and 7.2 struck the country, killing 164, with rescue and recovery operations continuing in Caracas and other affected areas.
Fearing that damaged buildings could collapse — or that aftershocks could bring them down — many residents have set up tents in roads. Others are sleeping on mattresses, mats or sheets laid out in gardens or on footpaths, waiting until authorities indicate it is safe to go home.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the risk of significant aftershocks remains.
