Brazil have taken sole possession of the World Cup’s all-time goals record after beating Scotland 3-0, bringing their total to 244. But the record may last only a matter of hours — Germany, who were level on 241 goals entering the day, face Ecuador in New York tonight and could overtake them.

The battle for the record has been back and forth since the tournament opened. On June 14, Brazil drew 1-1 with Morocco when they held the record at 238 goals. But that same night, Germany beat Curaçao 7-1 in Houston to move to 239 goals — overtaking Brazil. A further Germany goal before Brazil responded levelled the rivals at 241 apiece heading into today’s round.

Brazil’s 3-0 win over Scotland in Miami added three more goals to take their total to 244, giving them an outright lead once more. With Germany’s match against Ecuador in New York kicking off at 2am Bangladesh time tonight, the record could change hands again before morning.
