If investment in the agriculture and food-processing industry is increased and the use of modern technology ensured, Bangladesh’s food exports will expand further in future and the country’s position in the global market will become stronger, Commerce Minister Khondaker Abdul Muktadir has said. Various food products made in Bangladesh are currently exported to the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union countries and other markets around the world, he said, and demand for these products in foreign markets is steadily rising, strengthening the country’s export sector. He gave the information in parliament on Monday, replying to a written question from Jasim Uddin Ahmed, a ruling-party member from the Chattogram-14 constituency.

Khondaker Abdul Muktadir said that, with the growth of the country’s agriculture and food-processing industry, various Bangladeshi food products have found a place in the international market. They are now regularly exported to the United States, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, India, the Netherlands and various EU countries. The minister said exportable food products include tea, various vegetables, fruit, betel leaf, oilseeds, sugar, agro-processed goods, edible oil, various soft drinks, and white and frozen fish.

He said the acceptance of Bangladeshi food products in foreign markets has grown because of production and processing that maintain international standards, and that efforts to diversify export markets and find new ones are continuing. The minister added that increasing exports of food and agriculture-based products has created new possibilities for the country’s foreign-currency earnings, and that the government is implementing various measures to support exporters, improve product quality and increase competitiveness in the international market. He expressed hope that, with more investment and modern technology in agro-processing, Bangladesh’s food exports would expand further and the country’s global market position would strengthen.
