China’s Guangzhou Modern Cancer Hospital has claimed to provide advanced treatment to Bangladeshi cancer patients at a lower cost than Singapore and Thailand. Officials of the institution said that, on average, at least 30 Bangladeshi patients now go there for treatment each month.
The hospital’s vice-president and director of its international division, He Langbing, gave the information at a discussion in the capital’s Gulshan, organised by the Bangladesh-China Apon Media Club and the Bangladesh Health Reporters Forum (BHRF). The hospital’s oncology specialist, Wu Wei, and the BHRF general secretary, Mujahid Shuvo, were present.
He Langbing said Guangzhou Modern Cancer Hospital had two decades of experience in treating foreign patients and was certified by the international quality-control body the JCI. Modern, minimally invasive methods of cancer treatment were used there, he said, and alongside the treatment of lung and breast cancer there were plans to open separate departments for liver and pancreatic diseases in future.
He said patients from 103 countries, including Bangladesh, had so far received treatment at the hospital. Bangladeshi patients had been going there for several years, but the number had risen significantly since last year, he said.
According to He Langbing, about 30 Bangladeshi patients now go to the hospital for treatment every month. He claimed the quality of life of many patients who received treatment had improved, and that some had become cancer-free.
The oncology specialist, Wu Wei, said the hospital gave special importance to ensuring that patients’ physical condition did not worsen during treatment, and mentioned the use of advanced technology to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He added that, while the hospital’s cost for advanced cancer treatment was somewhat higher than India’s, it was significantly lower than in Singapore and Thailand. A consultancy centre had also been opened in Dhaka for the convenience of Bangladeshi patients, where various treatment-related advice would be available, he said.
