DHAKA — Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the government has paid off the equivalent of $90.66 million in foreign loans since taking office.

He made the disclosure Tuesday afternoon in parliament in response to a starred question from Rumeen Farhana, an independent member representing Brahmanbaria-2.

Farhana asked the minister how much foreign debt Bangladesh currently holds, what steps have been taken to repay it and whether the current government has repaid any loans since taking office.

The minister said that as of February this year, the Bangladesh government’s outstanding foreign debt stood at the equivalent of $78.07 billion.

He said the Economic Relations Division repays foreign loans on behalf of the government. Each fiscal year, a projection is made of the likely total cost of principal and interest payments on foreign debt, and a corresponding allocation is set aside in the budget. Repayment is made throughout the year according to the schedule, using the budget allocation, he said.
