RAB-12 has arrested a man, Rabiul Islam, 36, with 1,200 yaba tablets in Nandigram, Bogura. Rabiul was vice-president of the Nandigram upazila unit of Chhatra Dal, the organization has confirmed. He has since been expelled from the organization over the incident.
He was produced before a court Wednesday, August 26.
He was arrested earlier, in an operation conducted Tuesday night in the Nundaha area of the Nundaha-Muradpur regional road in the upazila’s Burail union. He is the son of the late Abdur Rahim of Nundaha village in the upazila. RAB subsequently filed a case over the incident at Nandigram police station.
According to the case’s first information report, a RAB-12 team on patrol near Nandigram bus stand received a tip that a person was traveling by CNG-run auto-rickshaw from Majhira bus stand in Shajahanpur upazila toward Nundaha village, carrying yaba for sale. Acting on the information, RAB members set up a checkpoint on the paved Nundaha-Muradpur road in the Nundaha area. Around 9:05 p.m., an unregistered passenger CNG-run auto-rickshaw arrived at the checkpoint and was stopped and searched. The lone passenger, Rabiul Islam, was questioned on suspicion. A search of his jeans pockets turned up 1,200 yaba tablets in six polythene bags. Cash of 3,150 taka, believed to be drug-sale proceeds, was also seized.
Mostafizur Rahman Tareq, general secretary of the Nandigram upazila unit of Chhatra Dal, said: “You already know that we have cooperated with anti-narcotics operations at various locations in the upazila, helping detain drug dealers and hand them over to police. We want a drug-free Nandigram.”
Confirming Rabiul’s organizational affiliation, he added that the party bears no responsibility for any individual’s crime, and that Rabiul had already been expelled after the allegation against him came to light.
Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Nandigram police station, said a case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act based on the first information report submitted by RAB. The arrested accused was sent from Nandigram police station to Bogura court Wednesday morning.
