The information and broadcasting minister, Zahir Uddin Swapan, has said there is no place for brokers or middlemen of any kind in the distribution of family cards. If allegations of irregularities are proved, strong action will be taken against those involved.

The minister made the remarks on Tuesday morning at the opening of a tree-planting programme on both banks of the Swanirbhar canal at Kutubpur in Gournadi, a site associated with the memory of the late president Ziaur Rahman.

The minister said the people are the source of power and that those in office are only their servants. Everyone must come forward to protect the environment through tree planting, he said.

The guests later planted saplings of various species along both banks of the canal. Leaders and activists of the local BNP and its associate organisations also took part in the programme.

Those present included the district BNP general secretary, Mizanur Rahman Khan Mukul; the convener of the Gournadi upazila BNP, Syed Sarwar Alam; the upazila BNP member secretary, Sharif Zahir Sajjad Hannan; the convener of the municipal unit, Md Zakir Hossain Sharif; the acting member secretary, Shafiqur Rahman Sharif Swapan; the upazila BNP senior joint convener, Badiuzzaman Mintu; and the district Jubo Dal’s Syed Alam Khan Sentu, among others.
