India will resume tourist visa applications for Bangladeshis from 28 June, High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi announced on Thursday (June 25) at a press conference at the Indian Visa Centre in Jamuna Future Park, Dhaka. The announcement came shortly after Trivedi presented his credentials to President Md. Sahabuddin, formally beginning his tenure as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
“I am very happy to announce the resumption of ordinary tourist visas. Visa applications can be submitted from 28 June. Emergency medical visas will continue to be issued on humanitarian grounds,” Trivedi said. He said applications would initially be accepted at five centres — Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna — with the programme to be expanded further in due course.
“I hope this will strengthen the ties between the peoples of the two countries,” the high commissioner said. “This is the first thing I did as high commissioner. I am very pleased. I hope the ordinary people here will be pleased too.” He added that he intended to visit visa centres periodically to hear directly from members of the public and to seek input from journalists.
