Eggs are among the most popular nutrient-rich foods in Bangladesh. They are widely available, relatively affordable and easy to cook, but their effect on cholesterol has long been debated.

Harvard- and Stanford-trained gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi said in a social media video that eating eggs every day for two weeks could produce several positive changes in the body.

Sethi described eggs as a source of high-quality complete protein. One egg contains protein, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and nutrients including choline, he said. An egg yolk has about 2.5 grams of protein and the white has about 4 grams, according to Sethi.

Potential benefits for eye health

Sethi said lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs could support eye health and may help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

Choline for the brain and liver

Choline plays an important role in memory and normal brain function and may help reduce excess fat accumulation in the liver. Experts say moderate egg consumption may help lower the risk of fatty liver disease.

What experts say about cholesterol

A common concern is that eggs raise cholesterol. Sethi said eggs may increase beneficial high-density lipoprotein, or HDL, cholesterol in most healthy people. Eating eggs at breakfast may also improve satiety and help keep blood sugar relatively stable, he said.

Experts generally consider one egg a day safe for healthy adults. People with heart disease, high cholesterol or other complex health conditions should follow advice from a doctor or dietitian about how many eggs to eat.

Tofu can be an alternative for people who do not eat eggs. It provides high-quality plant protein that can help meet the body’s protein needs.
