India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said it will gradually normalize visa services for Bangladeshi citizens, in coordination with security agencies, as the situation improves. The statement came in the government’s response to recommendations in the ninth report of India’s parliamentary committee on external affairs, titled “The Future of India-Bangladesh Relations,” according to an Indian media report.
The committee recommended that Bangladesh and India build a bilateral consular cooperation framework for regular review of visa policy, resolution of grievances and effective steps to reduce unnecessary harassment of legitimate travellers, while continuing necessary security measures. It warned that further limiting visas for Bangladeshis and tightening security-related restrictions could have a negative effect on communication and relations between the peoples of the two countries.
The report also referred to Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India. The government told the committee that India had followed its humanitarian policy in sheltering the former prime minister, but had not allowed its territory to be used for any political activity against another country.
