The acting Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Kaisar Kamal, has said the foundation of women’s education and political empowerment in Bangladesh was built by the three-time former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He said that in that continuity the present prime minister, Tarique Rahman, is taking steps fit for the times to establish equality-based good governance and strong leadership, consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He made the remarks on Sunday, 26 July, when a high-level delegation from the United Nations Office for Project Services, led by the country manager for UNOPS Bangladesh and Bhutan, Sudhir Muralidharan, paid a courtesy call on the acting Speaker at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

During the meeting the delegation formally invited the acting Speaker to attend as chief guest a “national campaign event on SDG localisation” to be held at the Liberation War Museum in Dhaka on 8 August. Kaisar Kamal accepted the invitation, consented to attend and thanked the delegation.

At the meeting Kaisar Kamal said Begum Khaleda Zia’s contribution to the steady progress of women’s development and political participation in the country is important. In the same continuity, he said, the present government is implementing various initiatives to establish equality, good governance and effective leadership, which will help in achieving the SDG targets.
