A brief exchange between US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump has triggered widespread speculation on social media, though there is no confirmed account of what was actually said or why. The speculation followed the two attending the Freedom 250 Grand Prix event on Sunday, August 23, after which Melania was seen leaving her seat.
In a video circulating on social media, Trump and Melania are seen sitting side by side in a viewing booth at the event. At one point, Trump leans toward Melania and says something to her. Melania appears serious and keeps some distance in her body language. Moments later, she gets up and leaves.
Because the audio in the video is unclear, exactly what was said between the two is not known. After the video spread, some social media users have tried to work out the conversation by reading their lips.
“Can any lip-reader tell what’s being said between Trump and Melania here?” one user wrote.
Others, looking at the couple’s body language, have speculated there may have been some tension or disagreement between them. However, the video contains no clear evidence that the two were arguing.
The online speculation has also drawn in the name of Trump aide Natalie Harp. Her role within the president’s inner circle, and her closeness to Trump, have previously prompted online discussion about her as well.
Some users have tried, without any evidence, to connect Harp’s presence to the alleged tension between Melania and Trump.
“It looks like Trump and Melania were arguing about something at today’s Freedom 250 event,” one user wrote. “My guess is it’s about Natalie Harp.”
Another wrote: “Melania left right after Natalie Harp was seen in the booth.”
However, exactly why Melania got up in the video, or what was said between her and Trump, remains unknown.
