Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin, additional secretary of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, told Amar Desh that the vetting of the new pay scale had been completed and sent to BG Press last Thursday (September 17). Once published from there, it is issued in the form of a gazette. Asked whether the gazette would be issued that same day, the official said: “Our work is done; it is now entirely BG Press’s jurisdiction.”
The cabinet approved the new pay structure for government officials and employees on August 31, deciding to raise basic pay by between 100 and a maximum of 142 percent depending on grade. After the cabinet meeting, cabinet secretary Nasimul Gani said the notification would be published within a week. Part of the draft of the new structure had been sent from the Finance Division to the Law Ministry for vetting on August 31, with the remainder following later. Once the Law Ministry’s vetting was complete, the gazette publication process reached its final stage.
Under the new National Pay Scale 2026, the existing 20 grades have been retained. Basic pay for officials in grades 1 through 11 has been raised by up to 100 percent, meaning basic pay in those grades has roughly doubled. Government employees in grade 20, meanwhile, have had their basic pay raised by up to 142 percent: under the new structure, basic pay in that grade rises from 8,250 taka to 20,000 taka. Basic pay for grade 1 officials has been set at 156,000 taka, up from 78,000 taka.
Basic pay will be implemented in three phases between July 1, 2026 and July 1, 2027, while the various allowances will take effect together from January 1, 2028. Pensioners’ net pensions will be raised in phases in the same way.
The pay rise for roughly 2.4 million government employees will cost the government an additional 105,580 crore taka a year. The government has said a separate financial provision will be kept in the budget for this. The order was signed by finance secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Majumder, by order of the President.
