Stolen brass idols recovered from Kali temple in Nagarkanda, 4 detained

Police have recovered two brass idols stolen from a Kali temple in Nagarkanda, Faridpur. Four people have been detained on allegations of involvement in the incident.

The idols were recovered around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, during an operation in the upazila’s Jungurdi village, from the courtyard of Mostafa Molla’s home. The two recovered idols together weigh roughly 22 kilograms.

Those detained are Shiyab Munshi, 20, of Jungurdi village; Ruman Talukder, 19, of Shasha village; Mohsin Sheikh, 21, of Chagoldi village; and Abir Ahmed, 18, of Jungurdi village — all in Nagarkanda upazila.

According to police sources, temple caretaker Rama Chakraborty discovered the idols had been stolen when she went to perform puja at the temple on the morning of Monday, August 17. She had locked the temple and gone home on Sunday night. Returning the next morning, she found the temple’s lock broken and the two brass idols inside missing. After discussions with the temple committee, a written complaint was filed at Nagarkanda police station.

Police launched an investigation based on the complaint. At one stage of the investigation, based on information provided by the detained individuals, police conducted an operation in Jungurdi village and recovered the two stolen idols.

Faridpur Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Nagarkanda Circle) Muhammad Al Fahad confirmed the incident, saying the two valuable brass idols stolen from the temple had been recovered. Four people have been detained on allegations of involvement in the incident. Police are investigating whether anyone else was involved. The process of handing over the recovered idols to temple authorities is under way, following completion of the legal process.
