Police in Shibchar, Madaripur, have arrested a man named Md Faruq Molla in connection with the rape and murder of a 28-year-old woman.
Details of the incident were disclosed at a police press briefing at Shibchar police station on Friday afternoon, August 21.
Police say that, during initial questioning, Faruq confessed to the killing. He also told police that he strangled the victim’s one-year-old son and threw the body into the Arial Khan river. However, the child’s body has not yet been recovered.
At the press briefing, police said that on Wednesday morning, August 19, they recovered the body of an unidentified woman from a wooded area in Bakorer Kandi, in Shibchar’s Madborerchar union. Her identity was later established. The victim was the daughter of Samrul Islam, of Attrika village in Natore’s Lalpur upazila. She had married Md Shahabuddin Howladar, of the Bara Meher area of Madaripur, roughly three years ago.
Police sources said the victim met Faruq at Madaripur court while her husband, Md Shahabuddin Howladar, was in jail in connection with a case. Building on that acquaintance, Faruq brought her to his home in Shibchar’s Bakorerkandi area, raped and killed her, and left her body in an abandoned location. Faruq also confessed to police that he strangled the victim’s one-year-old son and threw the body into the Arial Khan river.
Over the incident, the victim’s father, Samrul Islam, filed a murder case at Shibchar police station on Thursday, August 20. Police and RAB-8 then carried out an operation using technical assistance, arresting the main accused, Faruq, in Madaripur’s Rajoir on Thursday night.
The arrested Md Faruq Molla is the son of Md Ratan Molla, of Bakorerkandi in Shibchar upazila’s Madborerchar union.
Police said a gold nose stud and silver chain belonging to the victim, a pair of shoes, and a burned orna were recovered from Faruq’s home. Faruq had been arrested from Shibchar a few months earlier on a car-theft allegation.
Madaripur Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Salah Uddin Kader said the arrested Faruq admitted, during initial questioning, to involvement in the killing. An operation is under way to recover the child’s body. Police are investigating whether anyone else was involved in the killing.
