Police have arrested a young man in Chandina upazila, Cumilla, on charges of hurting religious sentiments and committing blasphemy.
Rakibul Hasan, son of the late Moynal Hossain from Faridpur village in Barera union, was detained on Friday night from his home.
Police and local sources said Rakibul Hasan had been accused of posting derogatory content about Islam, Hinduism and other religions on social media over a prolonged period.
Specifically, he is accused of using artificial intelligence to edit an image of Hindu religious figure Loknath Brahmachari and place it in front of the holy Kaaba in Mecca, then posting the manipulated image on Facebook. The image spread on social media, sparking local tensions.
Local residents detained him and handed him over to Chandina police.
Chandina police station officer-in-charge Md Nuruzzaman said: “He has been arrested on charges of religious blasphemy. After completing legal procedures, he has been sent to court.”
