Allah Almighty says in the Quran: “Indeed, We created man in the best of stature.” (Surah At-Tin: 4). In the same way, Allah has created every single thing on earth skillfully, in its proper form. Human beings are no exception. The shape, movement and posture of every object and living being in creation all lay claim to a kind of excellence when judged by their perfection. Because these matters lie beyond the reach of ordinary human judgment and research, many people criticize this boundless power of Allah, and, despite His prohibition, make various alterations to the bodies of humans and animals. For any person, unreasonable bodily alteration brings nothing but discomfort and disease.
It is stated in verse 119 of Surah An-Nisa that Satan promised Allah Almighty that he would incite people to corrupt Allah’s creation. A real reflection of this can be seen in today’s world. Many people are making bodily changes through tattooing, plastic surgery, transhumanism and various other means, which are clearly forbidden and reprehensible from an Islamic perspective. It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade tattooing the body. (Sahih Bukhari, 5408) A section of ordinary Muslims, lacking sufficient knowledge on this matter, are unknowingly engaging in such acts, altering the natural shape of their face and body in the name of fashion. This kind of artificial alteration of the beautiful human body given by Allah is not merely a disrespect of Allah’s creation, but tantamount to challenging His authority.
Faced with the easy availability of modern technology and worldly competition, humanity today is altering the natural form of creation. Among the goals of transhumanism, in particular, are making human beings immortal and establishing complete control over the human brain — matters that belong solely to Allah’s power. In essence, people take such steps out of dissatisfaction with Allah’s creation and decree, which constitutes clear disobedience for a Muslim. Allah Almighty says in verse 6 of Surah Al-Imran: “It is He who shapes you in the wombs as He wills.” In other words, the shape, color and height of our bodies are all manifestations of Allah’s wisdom and decree. Making unjust alterations to this is tantamount to disputing Allah’s decision.
The core purpose of our being sent to this world is to worship Allah with sincere devotion. But people, straying from this true goal, are engaging in these baseless competitions. Absorbed in the allure of outward beauty, they are forgetting the responsibility entrusted to them by the Creator and the grace of Paradise. In conclusion, apart from urgent and legitimate medical reasons, any bodily alteration or augmentation undertaken purely for the purpose of enhancing beauty is entirely forbidden in Islam.
