India will supply long-range missiles to Indonesia, alongside agreeing to strengthen cooperation in defense, critical minerals and other sectors, an Indian official said after a meeting between the two countries’ leaders on Tuesday.
AFP reported from Jakarta that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is hosting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Jakarta on a three-day state visit. Top of the visit’s agenda was an agreement on India-made BrahMos missile systems.
Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X that an agreement on “cooperation on the BrahMos system” was signed during the visit.
He added that the two countries also reached an agreement on air-to-air missile cooperation, which would “strengthen technical cooperation and defense capability.”
Details of these agreements were not disclosed, and Indonesia’s defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment.
After his meeting with Prabowo, Modi said “growing mutual trust” between Jakarta and New Delhi had further strengthened the foundation for cooperation on defense, security and maritime affairs.
“Today we agreed to further strengthen defense exchanges, disaster management and industrial cooperation,” he told reporters.
Modi said the coast guards of both countries would also work together to ensure maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
Asia’s two largest democracies agreed to work jointly on critical minerals — of which Indonesia holds vast reserves — and the steel industry.
“A new partnership is beginning between our two countries’ companies in producing stainless steel and rare earth magnets,” Modi said. Prabowo said Indonesia and India consider economic cooperation one of the main pillars of their bilateral relationship.
He said the two leaders agreed to expand bilateral trade and move quickly on talks toward a preferential trade agreement.
Both leaders also welcomed progress in the conservation and restoration of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta, Central Java. They will visit the temple together on Wednesday.
A statement from India’s foreign ministry said Modi will travel to Australia and New Zealand after concluding his visit to Indonesia.
