Miswak’s importance
Miswak, a traditional tooth-cleaning twig, is described as an important and often neglected Sunnah for both men and women. Imam Abu Hanifa regarded it as an important Sunnah of ablution. A hadith in Bukhari (843) says the Prophet would have ordered miswak with every prayer if it were not difficult for the community.
Another report says Gabriel instructed the Prophet to use miswak whenever he visited him (Mishkat al-Masabih: 356). Before his death, the Prophet requested a miswak and used it with Aisha’s help (Bukhari: 846). Aisha also reported that women and men share the same ruling and that she used and washed the Prophet’s miswak (Abu Dawud: 52; Mishkat: 354).
Hadith describe miswak as a means of cleaning the mouth and gaining Allah’s pleasure (Nasai: 5; Ibn Majah: 289). The article says regular use may remove dirt and odour and cites a book claiming benefits including stronger gums and other health effects; these broader claims should be understood as attributed claims rather than established medical advice.
The article contrasts miswak with toothbrushes and claims some toothpastes contain microplastics and that miswak has antiseptic properties. Readers should follow evidence-based dental guidance and consult a dentist for oral-health problems.
