Police have arrested two drug dealers with yaba in separate drives in Darshana, Chuadanga. A senior judicial magistrate’s court later handed them jail terms and fines of varying lengths through a summary trial.
They were arrested in separate drives in Ishwarchandrapur and Ajmpur of the upazila between 9pm and 10pm on Saturday (1 August).
Police said that at around 9pm, acting on secret information, a police team led by sub-inspector (SI) Md Amanat Ullah conducted a drive on the paved road in front of Ishwarchandrapur Government Primary School. Md Ziaur Rahman Zia (47) was arrested there with yaba.
Zia is the son of the late Shukur Ali of Ishwarchandrapur Schoolpara.
Then, at around 10pm, in another drive, police arrested another drug dealer, Md Akash Hossain (22), with yaba in front of his own home in Ajmpur village.
Akash is the son of Harunur Rashid of the same village.
After their arrest, the accused were immediately produced before the senior judicial magistrate’s summary trial court. With the offences proven at the end of the trial, Ziaur Rahman was given one year’s rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 1,000 taka, or another month in jail in default.
Akash Hossain, meanwhile, was given six months’ simple imprisonment and a fine of 5,000 taka, or another month in jail in default, by the court.
Darshana police station officer-in-charge (OC) Nazrul Islam confirmed the jail terms and fines of the arrested accused.
