Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has responded to a renewed “love jihad” controversy over his third marriage — a communal allegation levelled by Hindu-nationalist critics against interfaith couples. He said plainly that none of his wives or his current partner had ever changed religion, and that his marriages had been civil ceremonies in which the question of conversion never arose.

In a recent interview with Rediff, Aamir said: “Gauri, Kiran Rao or Reena Dutta — none of them changed their religion. We had civil marriages. Gauri is not even Hindu; she is Christian. But she does not regularly practise religion either. Life seems to be getting more absurd with time.”

Aamir Khan has long faced “love jihad” allegations over his relationships and marriages with women of other faiths, and the issue resurfaced on social media after his recent marriage to Gauri Spratt. The actor called the allegations entirely baseless, saying his family had always respected different religions and cultures.

“Our family is very inclusive,” Aamir said. “My two sisters married into Hindu families. My daughter Ira Khan’s husband is also Hindu. My cousin Mansoor Khan married a Christian woman.”

Aamir said all his relationships had rested on mutual respect and understanding, not on religion, and that there was therefore no basis for interpreting his personal life through a religious lens.

On 5 July, Aamir Khan married for the third time at his Mumbai residence, in the presence of close friends and family members. His current wife is Gauri Spratt.

He was previously married to Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao. The actor has said on various occasions that he has maintained respectful relationships with both former wives even after divorce, and has consistently spoken positively about co-parenting and preserving family bonds. Source: Rediff.
