Jihua Zhang, a professor at China’s Shandong University and a visiting (adjunct) teacher in the oceanography department of the University of Chittagong (CU), has married a CU student after converting to Islam. After the marriage he has taken the new name Al Amin.

On Saturday (18 July) evening, Sumaiya Akter, a third-year political science student at the University of Chittagong, announced the marriage in a Facebook post. Jihua Zhang later confirmed it by posting a photo of the two on his Facebook account. Sumaiya Akter is the assistant general secretary (AGS) of the Nawab Faizunnesa Hall union at the university and is a familiar face on campus through selling various home-made snacks and pithas she prepares herself.

On the marriage, Sumaiya said Jihua Zhang had come to the University of Chittagong twice as a visiting teacher, and that they married on 14 July. He voluntarily converted to Islam before the marriage and took the new name Al Amin, she said. She added that they met while she was taking a Chinese-language course at the university; a relationship grew from that acquaintance and they married under Muslim family law.

Professor Dr Mohammad Moslem Uddin of the University of Chittagong’s oceanography department said Jihua Zhang had served as a visiting (adjunct) professor under a department project, teaching students data modelling and environmental analysis. Over the past two years he had come to the university twice during the summer vacation, most recently staying on campus in June, the teacher said.
