Tensions between Tel Aviv and Ankara have risen over Israeli airstrikes in Syria. Israel, however, does not want to turn Turkey into an enemy. An Israeli defense official says the two countries are trying to avoid conflict by exchanging messages through secret channels of communication.

The official told Kan News: “When the messages don’t achieve anything, Israel has to take action.”

Israel has warned that if Turkey’s military presence in Syria becomes a threat to Israeli security, it will be countered. In particular, the country is prioritizing efforts to prevent Turkey from deploying air-defense systems, advanced missiles and drones in Syria.

As part of this, Israel struck the infrastructure and runway of the Abu al-Duhur military base in northern Syria. Tel Aviv claims it struck before Turkish military equipment could reach the base, sending a clear message to Damascus: there is no objection to Syria building up its military capability, but no new security threat will be allowed to develop along the border.

Turkey, for its part, has denied that any Turkish military representative or troops were present at the base at the time of the strike.
