Five more children have died of measles in the country in the past 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services said. Over the same period, 1,009 people were reported with suspected measles and 139 confirmed cases were identified, bringing the total of new measles patients to 1,148.
With this, government figures show that the total number of people infected with measles and measles-like symptoms since March 15 — a period of 96 days — has risen to 100,677, with 666 deaths in all. Of those deaths, 93 children died of confirmed measles. The remaining 573 children died of measles-like symptoms.
The information was provided in a statement issued Thursday by the control room of the Directorate General of Health Services.
The statement said that from March 15 to 8 a.m. on June 18, a total of 89,904 patients with suspected measles symptoms had been recorded. To date, 10,773 confirmed measles patients have been identified. Over the same period, 74,184 people with suspected measles symptoms were admitted to hospitals, and 70,503 have recovered from measles and been discharged.
The Directorate General of Health Services said that of the five children who died in the past 24 hours, two were from Sylhet division, with one each in Dhaka, Chattogram and Khulna divisions. Over the same period, the highest number of “suspected” cases was recorded in Dhaka division, with 427 patients. Of those, 84 were confirmed as measles. Division-wise mortality figures show that Dhaka division has recorded the most measles deaths to date, at 297. Of these, 57 were children with confirmed measles, and 240 died of suspected measles. Rajshahi division follows, with 89 deaths in all, including two from confirmed measles; Sylhet, 75, including three; Chattogram, 58, including 10; Barishal, 57, including 19; Mymensingh, 55, including two; Khulna, 27 deaths from measles-like symptoms; and Rangpur division, eight deaths from measles-like symptoms.
