China hopes to further strengthen strategic communication with Bangladesh’s new BNP-led government, advance the traditional friendship between the two countries, expand high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and increase coordination on multilateral issues. It also wants to take the China-Bangladesh comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to a new height.

According to a report in the Global Times, regarded as a mouthpiece of the Chinese government, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said this on Monday in response to media questions at a news briefing about the upcoming China visit of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. In an announcement, the Chinese foreign ministry said the prime minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, would visit China from June 24 to 26 at the invitation of State Council Premier Li Qiang.

Guo Jiakun said it would be Tarique Rahman’s first visit to China since taking office as prime minister. During the visit, China’s top leaders would hold meetings and talks with him, with in-depth exchanges of views on bilateral relations as well as on various international and regional issues of mutual interest, he said. The visit would also chart the course for the future development of relations between the two countries.

He also said that, during the visit, Tarique Rahman would take part in the Summer Davos Forum being held in Dalian, in China’s north-eastern Liaoning province. The event is known as the 17th annual meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said China and Bangladesh were longstanding friendly neighbours and comprehensive strategic cooperative partners. In recent years, under the strategic guidance of the two countries’ leaders, China-Bangladesh relations had advanced steadily, political mutual trust had deepened, and practical cooperation had produced fruitful results that had brought real benefits to the people of both countries, he said.

He said China saw the visit as an important opportunity. Through it, Beijing hoped to expand exchanges and cooperation with Bangladesh’s new government in all sectors and to further strengthen bilateral relations.
