A court has sent six Awami League leaders and activists on a three-day remand in a case filed under the anti-terrorism act at the capital’s Gulshan police station over planning and conspiring to carry out sabotage and destructive activities. The allegations are untested.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rakibul Hasan’s court passed the order on Saturday in response to a police application.
Those placed on remand are: the general secretary of the Chougachha upazila Awami League in Jashore, Mehedi Masud Chowdhury; member S M Rezwan Habib Alif and activist Md Aminur Rahman; the joint secretary of the MM College unit Chhatra League, Nannu Mia; the former president of the Chougachha upazila Chhatra League, Md Ibrahim Hossen; and Sajal Ahmed, an activist of the Rajoir upazila Awami League in Madaripur.
Police said that on Friday night, on receiving news of a meeting of leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and Chhatra League at a shopping-mall food court in the Gulshan-1 area, they carried out a raid. Several fled on sensing the police presence, but six were detained.
Lists of various Chougachha upazila Awami League committees and the seals of its president and general secretary were seized from them, police said. A case was later filed against them under the anti-terrorism act at Gulshan police station.
Police claim that questioning may yield important information on the sabotage plan, the identification of fugitive associates and the unravelling of the case.
