Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has ordered the reactivation of the waterways around the capital, Dhaka.
He also directed the relevant authorities on how to prevent pollution of Dhaka’s rivers, improve the drainage system and keep the rivers navigable with a normal flow of water.
He gave the directives at a meeting on reopening the waterways around Dhaka, chaired by the prime minister.
The meeting was held on Sunday in the special conference room of the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Shahadat Swadhin conveyed the information.
He said the meeting had decided to reactivate the waterways around the capital. It was also decided to consider proposals from interested private companies and allow them to operate water buses on the waterways.
Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Swadhin said that, alongside reactivating the waterways, the prime minister had directed the relevant authorities on how to prevent pollution of Dhaka’s rivers, improve the drainage system and keep the rivers navigable with a normal flow of water.
The prime minister also directed that various species of trees be planted beside the walkways built around the rivers, to ensure environmental protection and enhance the beauty of the riverbanks.
Those present at the meeting included Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam; State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam; Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan; Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam; Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Atikur Rahman Rumon; and senior officials of the relevant ministries and agencies.
