About 45 top executives and business leaders from 25 leading US industrial and business firms will visit Bangladesh by the end of next week, as part of an effort to boost US investment in Bangladesh and deepen the two countries’ economic relationship, Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin has said.
He gave the information at a press briefing on Saturday (1 August) after a meeting between Prime Minister Tareque Rahman and the US special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs, Sergio Gor, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.
Mahdi Amin said the visiting US delegation would hold a series of meetings with responsible officials of various ministries and government offices, and was also due to meet Prime Minister Tareque Rahman.
He said: “At the meeting, the US side expressed strong confidence in Prime Minister Tareque Rahman’s leadership. They believe stability has returned to Bangladesh under the prime minister’s leadership, the democratic advance continues, and they praised various policy steps the government has taken over the past roughly five months.”
The spokesperson said: “There was discussion on how to advance Bangladesh’s progress and the multidimensional Bangladesh-US relationship through a deeper economic partnership — in particular, boosting US investment in Bangladesh, expanding bilateral trade, how US companies can help create jobs in Bangladesh, and how the Bangladesh government can provide policy support in these areas.”
He said: “There was also detailed discussion on ways to increase exports and imports. And, as a first step towards ensuring more US investment in Bangladesh in future, about 45 business leaders or front-rank executives from 25 leading US industrial and business firms will visit Bangladesh by the end of next week.”
Mahdi Amin said: “The reflection of international confidence in Prime Minister Tareque Rahman’s leadership is already visible in various areas. The positive revision of the US State Department’s travel advisory also carries a positive message for investors. Through this, it will be possible to present business and investment opportunities in Bangladesh more broadly.”
He said: “The meeting, held in an extremely cordial and warm atmosphere, discussed taking the historic Bangladesh-US relationship to a new height. On that basis, the government hopes to expand trade with the United States and attract more investment from the country, which will help increase employment at home.”
Mahdi Amin added: “After the meeting, US special envoy Sergio Gor gave the media a similarly positive message. He expressed the hope that the United States would, as in the past, stand by Bangladesh as a friendly nation, and that the confidence it had expressed in Prime Minister Tareque Rahman’s leadership would further strengthen the future relationship.”
