To control congestion and restore road discipline, Dhaka plans to install automated AI traffic signals at 50 more locations at an estimated cost of about Tk100 crore, or roughly Tk2 crore per signal.

The cost includes poles, foundations, steel barriers, electricity, traffic-police control rooms, road cutting, cameras, control boxes, tablets and other infrastructure and technology. DNCC will spend about Tk55 crore at 28 locations and DSCC about Tk44 crore at 22 locations, or about Tk99 crore in total excluding maintenance.

Following a July 18 meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed the two city corporations to add 50 automated signals. The Local Government Ministry allocated Tk50 crore to each.

City-corporation contractors will build barriers, control rooms, poles, foundations and electrical works; BUET will design the system, supply signals, control boxes, tablets and cameras, and survey traffic. DNCC’s civil works are estimated at Tk43 crore, with about Tk8.36 crore for steel barriers, Tk8.21 crore for poles, Tk5.70 crore for foundations, Tk4 crore for electrification and Tk16 crore for other works; BUET and equipment add about Tk12 crore. DSCC’s civil works are about Tk35 crore and BUET allocation about Tk9 crore.

Last year, 22 junctions received locally made signals at a cost of about Tk18 crore, including InterContinental, Banglamotor, Sonargaon, Farmgate, Bijoy Sarani, the Prime Minister’s Office and Jahangir Gate. AI cameras were later added and officials reported better traffic control.

Urban planner Adil Muhammad Khan said AI fines increased compliance but lane management and other traffic discipline are also necessary. Officials said tendering is complete or under way and work will begin soon. The new locations include major routes and junctions in Mirpur, Agargaon, Gulshan, Tejgaon, Mohakhali, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi and Hatirjheel-Moghbazar.
