Dengue infections continue across the country. Six more people have died of dengue in the past 24 hours, and 1,948 have been admitted to hospitals nationwide. This year’s dengue death toll has risen to 245, and hospital admissions have passed 79,000.
The figures were given in a dengue press release from the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services on Wednesday (September 30).
According to the release, 1,948 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in the past 24 hours, bringing the total treated in hospital since the start of the year to 79,620. Six more died over the same period, taking this year’s toll to 245.
According to the directorate, dengue usually rises in the monsoon season as Aedes mosquitoes spread. Health experts advise seeing a doctor quickly for symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, vomiting or weakness.
To prevent dengue, emphasis is being placed on destroying Aedes breeding sites and regularly clearing standing water in and around homes, including flower pots, discarded containers and parts of buildings under construction.
With hospital admissions rising every day, those involved say treatment and mosquito control need to be stepped up.
